Proud to be an American

Tonight for Family Home Evening we talked about America and freedom and the soldiers who protect it. Our discussion was eye-opening for our older boys, who had never spent a moment thinking about the people who have sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy. Quite frankly, I don't think about it enough.

We spent some time writing notes of thanks and encouragement to an Army soldier who is deployed. Our kids were shocked to learn that this young man will be away from his sweet wife and two-year-old little girl for an entire year. They couldn't believe the sacrifice. It is pretty incredible.

Tomorrow we'll send a little package in the mail to this special soldier, Dan Shaha. He doesn't know us at all, but we know his parents and his siblings quite well. It seems a small gesture, considering his amazing efforts, but we are glad to do a little something to thank him for his service. President Obama tells us that war combat is over, but we know that thousands of soldiers like Dan are still separated from their families, keeping the peace in distant lands.

As we talked tonight, I couldn't help but think of the anthem, "God Bless the USA." I found a touching video on YouTube that seems perfect to share tonight. I am proud to be an American!

From another mom of a "fighting" soldier, thank you. Obviously, President Obama chooses not to talk about the combat that my son Brad is going through right now in Afghanistan. He is definitely seeing action.

pass it on!
